"The Peace Foundation didn't just teach me technical skillsāthey taught me that my voice matters, that my story is important, and that I have a responsibility to lift others up."

The Full Story
Marcus Johnson was just 14 when he first walked into our youth media workshop. Quiet, reserved, and unsure of his place in the world, he had been referred by his school counselor who saw potential beneath his shy exterior.
"I didn't think I had anything to say," Marcus recalls. "I was just a kid from the neighborhood. Who would want to hear from me?"
Everything changed during his first video production project. Tasked with creating a short documentary about his community, Marcus discovered he had a powerful story to tellāand the skills to tell it well. His documentary about the corner store owner who'd been serving the neighborhood for 40 years went viral locally, earning him recognition and, more importantly, confidence.
Over the next four years, Marcus completed our entire youth media program, learning video production, podcasting, photography, and leadership skills. But the real transformation was internal. He found his voice and realized he had something important to contribute.
Today, at 22, Marcus is back at The Peace Foundationānot as a student, but as a mentor and workshop facilitator. He leads our Saturday sessions, working with youth who remind him of his younger self. His production company creates content for local nonprofits, and he's become an advocate for arts education in schools.
"The Peace Foundation didn't just teach me technical skills," Marcus says. "They taught me that my voice matters, that my story is important, and that I have a responsibility to lift others up the way they lifted me."
Marcus's journey represents what's possible when we invest in young people and give them the tools to succeed. His transformation from a shy teenager to a confident community leader inspires us every day and reminds us why this work matters.
